magicmalarkey | 0
Hello there. I've been fascinated with the distribution of video game consoles outside of the "core" regions (by coincidence, my beloved copy of Super Mario Land 2 since childhood is the Chinese Mani release) and I'm especially inclined towards the Hong Kong Famicom, which I may be interested in obtaining. Its 50/60Hz switch is what really catches my eye. Info on it and the HK SFC/SNES isn't the easiest to find in English, however. For anyone who owns one of these or knows enough about them, I have a few questions. I know the Famicom and Super Famicom can accept a US Genesis Model 1 AC adapter (and possibly a PAL Mega Drive one too? Moving to Europe or a PAL-dominated area may come to me in the future, so I'd like to make sure) - is the Hong Kong Famicom compatible with one? I've heard it should be (if I can recall correctly, it uses the same polarity and voltage, but I would need to double check). I have also heard about "Triad" PSUs which I have to research. I'm also wondering if the HK Famicom is compatible with a Japanese Disk System. Owning a Hong Kong SNES is probably out of the cards for me, but I am curious: what games does it accept? It feels like a stupid question, but I've only managed to scrounge up mixed answers, if none at all, with one YouTube channel running mixed games and only showing a cartridge in their camera shot when it was a flashcart. The 50/60Hz switch, I can only assume, forces PAL SNES games to run faster, similarly to what the HK Famicom is doing. Thank you for reading and for any answers that may help. Tyree_Cooper | 878
The HK Famicom is compatible with the Japanese Disk System. The HK Disk System is 100% the same as the Japanese one. All HK SFC and SNES are compatible with Japanese SFC carts. The HK SNES is a factory-modified UK SNES turned into an SFC with a 50/60 Hz switch. I took some photos of the internals of the HK FC and SNES if you are interested. The Singapore SNES ("Asian Version") is the one that runs both Japanese and European carts out of the box.
magicmalarkey | 0
So are we to say the HK SNES is just an SFC, then, and cannot run SNES carts? (They certainly could've been less confusing about it.) Interesting to hear the Asian version runs both SNES and SFC carts. I would be interested in seeing/knowing the info written on the HK FC and SFC/SNES AC adapters. Edited September 5 by magicmalarkey
Tyree_Cooper | 878
No, they did it the other way around, they took a stock of UK SNES and modified the internals to make it compatible to SFC carts only.By putting a different CIC lockout chip? Or just by software, not sure. FC and SFC adapter is the same, it's HVC-002HKG. Here some pics of the boards and adapters. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/a9tkau1u70dsn50/AACFnfLK07wDJgSMagtE7ffUa?dl=0 SNES adapter = GBR adapter Edited September 5 by Tyree_Cooper
magicmalarkey | 0
Here's an additional topic I forgot to mention. The Hong Kong Famicom manual mentions the NORMAL/SLOW switch having "two modes available" for the slow position, SLOW-A and SLOW-B. They alternate as such: NORMAL -> SLOW-A -> NORMAL -> SLOW-B ... Does anyone know what the difference between these two slow modes are?
Tyree_Cooper | 878
Never paid attention, does it really say that? You should head over to NesDev and ask, but most likely nobody has tested yet https://forums.nesdev.org/viewtopic.php?p=237084 https://forums.nesdev.org/viewtopic.php?p=243408 https://forums.nesdev.org/viewtopic.php?p=256161
