I hardly remember anything about V aside from a handful of nerdy losers at my school at the time suddenly getting all pretentious after seeing it.

Watchmen is fuckin awesome though.

Watchmen got crapped on by critics if I remember right but I thought it was awesome. The diehard Watchman graphic novel fans also had issue with it I think but they don’t understand how much it costs to make one second of a movie because if it stayed true to the graphic novel it would have been like a ten hour movie lol

Well fine then! I could have sworn the critics didn’t like it. Been wrong before!

Nah you’re remembering right. It was absolutely savaged by critics and the public at the time. They all wanted x-men or Spider-Man and couldn’t understand what this movie was. Over time it has finally been acknowledged as a pretty good movie.

I loved it and never understood the hate. Zack Snyder literally took stills from the comic book and put it in the movie. Some of that intro is ripped straight from the comic. It was impossible to get everything in but they released a directors cut that adds a lot more and even included the Tales of the Black Freighter.

People complained about the ending but I thought it was good and got to roughly the same outcome. The alien ending wasn’t going to make sense in movie format.

V for Vendetta I don’t think was quite as good. It’s good for a movie but they didn’t capture the comic as well imo.

huge fan of the Watchmen comic. went to a midnight showing of the movie (3/6/9@12AM). it was a weird experience, as so much of the movie is ripped directly from the page. it very much felt like watching a movie i'd already seen before. but i really liked it.

changing out the squid for mahattan as the final incident made sense to do for the movie, but is logically against the plan to unite the world (Veidt's comic plan had all of the Earth setting aside their differences and come together in the face of a seemingly interstellar threat. that same unity doesn't happen when the threat is American). but i thought it worked well enough for what it was. ABSOLUTELY watch the Director's Cut with the animated 'Tales from the Black Freighter', tho. 8/10. catch me on the right day and i'd bump it to a 9.

V for Vendetta was fine. i'm being generous with my 7/10 vote.

I think Watchmen the comic is way overrated and this movie put so much effort into translating the look that it missed the point. I liked the HBO series way more.

I guess it’s impossible for Watchmen to be underrated when it’s so broadly considered the best comic ever. I forgot about the TV show, I should watch that.

I unironically love the Watchmen movie  Being a Zack Snyder adaptation with a few random changes can’t dampen my enthusiasm for it. It’s definitely among my favorite superhero movies. The Ultimate Cut with the Black Freighter bits interspersed is weird and doesn’t work as well as a film IMO but I guess he was trying to make it more faithful to quell the nerds. 9/10

I never saw V for Vendetta, but I enjoyed Watchman.  I didn't learn until much later how much hate Watchman received.  I guess for me, it probably helped that I was not familiar with the source material, so I didn't care about the changes from the graphic novel.  Yes, the movie is a little bloated at some points, and there is a little too much slow motion.  The movie could have easily been 30 minutes shorter, but I still enjoyed the movie.  Rorschach was the obvious highlight for me.

V for Vendetta is good.  Good performances and tries to inject some philosophy into an action movie.  I do think it suffers from taking Thatcher era British politics and switching to Bush era US politics.  Lot of the background details are missing too.  Did you know V was a gardener and used fertilizer to make a bomb which led to his escape?

Watchmen is a lot more faithful.  Again good performances.  Without getting into the backup stories and meta textual stuff, the squid doesnt make sense.  The extended edition restores a lot of the background characters and pirate comic.

Watchmen the comic was perfect for the 80s because it played into that weird mix of patriotism and paranoia that was the Reagan era Cold War. The movie just didn't quite have the same impact for me. It has its moments, but for the most part, I was kind of meh.

V for Vendetta kind of plays into the "anarchy is cool" thing that was popular in the 00s. Though the Guy Fawkes mask craze it started can go die. I'm kind of meh on it, too.
