List of All North American Zelda Game Variants

Recommended Posts

I couldn't find a comprehensive list of all US Zelda game variants, so I made one (with a lot of help from @rondy). And then I expanded it to North America.

Rules:

  • Must be a North American release
  • Must include a game (I also included console bundles with digital games)
  • To be a separate variant the cartridge/disc, box, or manual must be different in some way (I don't want to go down the rabbit hole of other inserts)
  • The difference can be anything other than a different date code or any other not-very-meaningful manufacturing code
  • No prototypes or factory errors (another rabbit hole)

USA/USZ variants:

Mexican variant:

Platform Title
Gamecube Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker [+ Metroid Prime Bundle]

Honarable mentions go to "New 3DS XL: Hyrule Edition" and "New 3DS XL: Majora's Mask Edition" which were the only two zelda consoles I found that didn't include a game.

Here's a bunch of my research notes.

General:

NES:

LCD:

SNES:

  • Cart, box, and manual information is given here https://snescentral.com/article.php?id=0164
  • I was able to piece together likely pairings by going through ebay pictures
  • The NFR uses a different sticker but the purpose seems the same as the NES NFRs. Info here

Game Boy:

N64:

  • Nothing crazy here
  • Notable NFRs: MM gray is a demo and very rare, OoT gold is back sticker only
  • Majora's Mask also had a manual revision due to an accidental reference to a nonexistent 4-player mode.

GBC:

GBA:

  • Again, I found out about the two printings of the original version of Four Swords here https://zeldacollection.com/game-boy-advance/the-legend-of-zelda-a-link-to-the-past-four-swords/. It describes that the first printing has a sold metallic left side whereas the second printing has a slight gradient to white
  • It can sometimes be hard to tell with bad photography, so another way is to look under the recycle sign where the text is X% total recovered fiber. X can be 100 or 83
  • Pictures of three SP bundles are here as well as the two Game Boy bundles

Gamecube:

  • A nice list of game variants can be found here. It doesn't cover any console bundles though
  • Three WW games (PC NFR, Metroid Combo, Master Quest Combo) were only available through console bundles
  • Regular Master Quest and Collector's Edition were both avaiable as standalone and in bundles
  • A lot of these bundles I was able to confirm with pictures from https://www.instagram.com/joaquin.zeldacollector/
  • More info about the WW + Metroid bundle is here and here

Wii: Nothing special here.

DS: Or here, the Lite bundle is from the console bundle resource in general.

3DS:

Wii U: I learned that the blue globe was a variant here https://zeldacollection.com/nintendo-wii-u/the-legend-of-zelda-the-wind-waker-hd/

Switch: Most of these limited editions and many previous ones were gathered from this https://zelda.gamepedia.com/Gallery:Box_Art

While doing the research for this, I came across several things I couldn't confirm, so following are the things I still have questions about.

For most manual revisions after SNES, I am not sure which cart or box revision they match up with. Therefore, it's likely that there are more variants where only the manual changed.

For both Link's Awakening and Link's Awakening DX, I found high revision manuals (-4 and -2 respectively) without find some in between. The ones I'm missing are DMG-ZL-USA-2 and DMG-AZLE-USA-1.

It seems like some Wii and WiiU games received refurbished variants (see here). Does anyone know if there were any zelda refurbished variants?

To determine probable CIB combinations I assumed that the things below should be the same across all items (in most cases). When this is not enough, the next determining factor is how often it occurs on ebay. This is error prone, but unfortunately our only option (unless someone really feels like opening a couple sealed Zeldas).

Next, disc based games.

There are three identifying features on the box and one on the disc. First is the made in label (usually USA or Japan). Then to the left of the product code on the box is another code where the letter at the end denotes version. Right of the UPC is another 5 number barcode with the format 00A0B where A is the country of manufacture (0 = Japan, 1 = US) and B is the box revision starting from zero (correlates with the letter after the product code). Finally, on the back of the disc near the center hole is a version code.

Disc codes are really hard to see on ebay auctions, so more research needs to be done there eventually.

As of April 2020, I stopped tracking box revisions on pack-ins that are the normal console box with a Zelda sticker. But I figured I keep track on what I have seen for fun. So, here's SNES.

Type Code Back Color Zelda Sticker
Control Set SNS-S-HA-USA Black Free!
Control Set SNS-S-HA-USA Black Special Offer!
Control Set SNS-S-HA-USA-1 Blue Free!
Control Set SNS-S-HA-USA-1 Blue Special Offer!
Control Deck SNN-S-HB-USA Black Target Exclusive!

I did a lot of research on Gamecube pack-ins. Granted the pack-ins where not available for the entire lifetime of the console, so only a subset of these are possibly used in pack-ins. Here are all normal boxes I found. BR SS is the bottom right screen shot on the back of the box (there are two revisions with Goldeneye in the bottom right, the difference is if the Donkey Kong Jungle Beat screen shot is light or dark, denoted with "-l" or "-d"). Verified means I have found pictures with the box code. The rest I have only seen pictures of the color and BR SS. Finally, a code beginning with "C/GB" is made in China, and a code beginning with just "GB" is made in Japan.

I'm sure I've missed some since Gamecube boxes are not usually pictured very well (especially the box code on the tab).

Old image references the top screenshot on the box. It changed from the screen south of level 2 to the NW coast. Come to think of it, I just realized that the original screen shot had brown borders where the game has green ones south of Level 2. I guess that's probably why they changed it. I'll have more information when I recreate my research posts.

As you probably already know, the TM after the Nintendo Entertainment System makes your cart a first print.

Have you come across any factory errors?  I'd be curious what those look like, although I understand why you wouldn't want them on the list.

Not any that Hybrid doesn't have on his site. Look here for that: https://iamerror.gamehacking.org/?page=database&catID=5

Hah, those are cool!  Thanks for the link (no pun intended).  I would love to have one of the upside down Zelda label carts just for fun.  I'll have to keep my eyes peeled.

Yeah, I got outbid on an upside down Zelda 2 that was on ebay about 2 months ago. https://www.ebay.com/itm/333293439264

Started to work on Candian variants. I've started with NES. Unfortunately, I could only find a handful of CIB pictures on the internet. So, if anyone has a copy, it would be awesome if you can post pictures so I can see if there's anything I'm missing. I'm also missing some box codes (as well as one copyright date). So, far I've found 7 variants for Zelda 1, and another 5 for Zelda 2.

Z1 Box SOQ NES TM Zelda TM CR Box Code
1 Circle TM TM 87 NES-ZL-CAN
2 Oval TM R R 87 NES-ZL-CAN
3 Oval TM R R 87,89 NES-ZL-CAN*?
4 Oval TM/MC R R 88,89? NES-ZL-CAN-1?
Z2 Box SOQ NES TM Link TM CR Box Code
1 Circle TM TM 88 NES-AL-CAN
2 Oval TM R TM 88 NES-AL-CAN
3 Oval TM R TM 88,89 NES-AL-CAN*
4 Oval TM/MC R TM 88,89 NES-AL-CAN-1
Z1 Cart SOQ NES TM Zelda TM Cart Code CR Rev-A
1 Circle TM TM CAN No No
2 Circle TM TM CAN No Yes
3 Circle TM TM NES-ZL-CAN No Yes
4 Circle TM TM NES-ZL-CAN 85 Yes
5 Oval TM R R NES-ZL-CAN 85 Yes
Z2 Cart SOQ NES TM Link TM Cart Code CR Rev-A
1 Circle TM TM NES-AL-CAN No Yes
2 Circle TM TM NES-AL-CAN 85 Yes
3 Oval TM TM TM NES-AL-CAN 85 Yes
Z1 Manual Manual Code Zelda TM
1 NES-ZL-CAN-1 TM
Z2 Manual Manual Code Link TM
1 NES-AL-CAN TM
2 NES-AL-CAN-1 TM

Here are guesses at CIB combinations.

Z1   Z2
C I B   C I B
1 1 1   1 1 1
2 1 1   2 1 1
3 1 1   3 1 2
4 1 1   3 1 3
5 1 2   3 2 4
5 1 3
5 1 4

EDIT: Forgot to check for cart only on ebay somehow. I found 2 Z1 and 1 Z2 carts.

EDIT 2: Found more Zelda 1 boxes.

Ok, here are my research notes on non US, North American variants (mostly Canada).

General: Most of my research came from ebay.ca listings. A couple game came from https://zeldacollection.com, and a couple console bundles came from https://consolevariations.com/. Since there is much less stuff being sold in Canada then the US, it much easier for an uncommon variant to not show up. I'll try to point out specific versions I think might exist, but couldn't find visual proof.

NES: My CIB research is two posts up. I didn't find that many pictures of boxes, so I might me missing some. I also couldn't find box codes for the last box for each game.

SNES: I've heard that there might be Canadian specific SNES console bundle, but I couldn't find a picture. I did find two SNS ZL boxes, but I don't know how these match with the two SNS ZL carts.

N64: I found that Ocarina of Time came as the US version with a B&W french manual in parts of Canada. I'm not sure which US variants came with this manual, so I only included the two I saw. I couldn't find a french manual Majora's Masks. I'm not sure if it's because it doesn't exist or just rare.

GBC/GBA: I could only find three of these with French manuals, but I'm guessing more exist. Particularly, I'm pretty sure that the Zelda 1 Série Classique NES Manual exists due to this ad I found via https://twitter.com/noirmagnetique.

Cg_akhlUoAAoZ-Q.jpg:large

Gamecube: For the individually packaged games, I think I've gotten most of them. For the console bundles on the other hand, I'm pretty sure I'm missing several. However, the one Mexican exclusive game I found was a console bundle https://www.instagram.com/p/BLgj5bLBdIB/.

Wii: The one standout here is the Skyward Sword Steelbook which was exclusive to Future Shop in Canada. Also I could find any UPC 5: 00101 TPs. It seems like the reverse of the US where 00101 is common, but 00102 is rare.

DS/3DS: Most of these came with Canadian packaging. The only one I think I'm missing is the Phantom Hourglass DS Lite Bundle. I couldn't find a photo of a box on ebay.ca.

Wii U: I think all the North American Wii U Zelda games were USZ for all of North America.

Switch: However, the switch returned to using CAN codes with Canadian specific packaging.

More info:

Link's Awakening "first print" has 2 box variants, one glossy and one matte box. I don't have pictures right now (not until December end). I believe the glossy box is the real first print because the matte box has a similar texture to the player's choice box.

Link's Awakening has a -2 manual, I'm not sure where it came from. I'm also not sure where the player's choice cart with 'E' rating came from, possibly with the GB Pocket ICE color bundle? I know that bundle came with the non player's choice 'E' rating cart.

Some OOT N64 standard edition boxes, have a text inside that reads "gray cart version". I'm assuming these are the first print standard edition, most don't have this.

OOT N64 cart variants are gold cart v1.0 and v1.1 (A stamped back), gray cart v1.0, v1.1 (A stamped back), v1.2 (B stamped back) and player's choice cart v1.2 (B stamped back).

Link's Awakening DX 1st print is holographic with built-in cart holder, 2nd print less shiny holographic with removable cart tray, 3rd print is not holo. Each variant has its corresponding carts/manuals I believe. I need to check again.

Skyward Sword variants that I know of are, 1) w/ music CD, 2) w/ gold wiimote, 3) no-foil artwork cover (I don't think you mentioned this one).

CDi has some "vertical/rotated case" variants for Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon and Link: The Faces of Evil, check: https://www.ebay.com/itm/323770952618 and https://www.ebay.com/itm/283550098347 but I'm not sure if they're European variants, all Zeldas Adventure seem to come from Europe though.

Game & Watch Zelda [ZL-65] also came in blister pack.

OOT 3D Nintendo Selects also came in a red case (instead of the standard white 3DS case). They were sold at the Nintendo store in NYC at least for the 2nd half of 2017.

[NES Zelda CIB table]

I have a couple questions about where your table differs from mine. Keep in mind that most of my knowledge is based on ebay, and very likely to have some errors.

You have the no Rev-A, new screenshot box start with the first three screw cart. Do you have a reason for this? I only saw the that box with MiJ carts and on last time I looked at ebay.

Nice catch on the less saturated gold color. I never notice. I figured I'd make a gif with the photos you sent me, so here it is.

giphy.gif

Zelda 1 #06 on your table has a no Rev-A box with a Rev-A cart. Why do you think this is the case?

Similarly, #08 has the last no code box with the first coded cart. I'm also interested in knowing why for this too.

I've never seen the "Code -1, oval SOQ TM, 9-digit zip" box do you happen to have a picture?

Hadn't noticed the glossiness. I would love to see a picture when you get the chance.

I'm not sure about the -2 manual or PC 'E' cart for LA.

Unsurprisingly, I was never going to catch the OOT "gray cart version" box on ebay, so thanks.

I did find out that OOT carts have version codes. But, I forgot to go back and update my list. I'll be doing that in the future.

I actually have all three prints for LA DX, I've just named them differently. The unlabeled is the second print, the [U/ Box and Manual] is the first print, the [SOQ] is the third print.

The no-foil Skyward Sword is the unlabeled variant.

I'm pretty sure the vertical CDi games are Europe exclusive. I haven't seen one that looks like it came from the US. If you see the variants on Zelda Collection (https://zeldacollection.com/philips-cdi/) all the vertical ones are European.

Hadn't seen the blister pack for the Game & Watch, thanks. I found a picture here: https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/vintage-game-watch-zelda-never-opened-1723678297

You edited in this, since I started writing my above post. I found proof for this, be looking for videos of tours of the Nintendo Store. Here's the first one I found uploaded February 2018 https://youtu.be/C_oJAEGzpI8?t=1104. Look there it is! The front looks identical to the regular Nintendo Selects version. I wanted to see if it's still there, so the same guy made one in January 2019, but they moved the 3DS games and it no longer had the red case. Looking a bit earlier, here's one uploaded Aug 2018, https://youtu.be/Oj24dJZZcnw?t=323. That has it in the same spot as the original, but now in a white case.
