Splain 2,194 Editorials Team ·
It's happening! Let's collectively beat every Sega Genesis/Mega Drive game. I'm slowly verifying this list to make sure it's not missing anything, or including anything it shouldn't. Please chime in if you see anything that needs attention. We're beating these games, starting now. All games must be started no earlier than the posting of this thread. (November 13, 2019) There will be no "resets" at the end of the year; this is a focus on completing the entire library. Photos are not required but highly encouraged. Emulation is ok, but no cheat devices, cheat codes, looking up passwords, etc. Legitimate runs only. If you have questions about what constitutes "beating" a game, bring it up and we'll figure it out. (Typical requirements are to get an ending screen or credit roll, on the middle or default difficulty. Or beat the high score. Or win the tournament.) Some games are more obvious than others. 2

RH 4,440 Member ·
Well, I fired up Outrun last night because why not. What constitutes a finished game for that? I haven't played it in decades and I wasn't able to finish a race just yet. Do I need to simply finish one race, make it to all endings (A-E) Or do you have to drive it until you reach each path? Actually, I've never beat this game (only played it in the arcade.) Do you continually loop back if you win a race? I also tried Virtual Bart. Loved that one as a kid, but man it was tough. I think that was because of using a switch controller on an emulator on a Mac, though.
Splain 2,194 Editorials Team ·
@AverageOliver98 I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think there's an end to the Blue Spheres. I also think getting credits is enough to call those games beaten. Congrats on the first clear! @bronzeshield Wow, neat to look through that thread, makes me feel silly for starting a new one here lol. I should go through and gather up the requirements they used. @RH I watched a longplay of Outrun, and there's a credit sequence after getting all endings A-E. Or at least it looks like that's what triggers it.
RH 4,440 Member ·
Thanks splain. Any required difficulty level? As someon who loves but sucks at games, I’m probably going to want to try this on “super easy”.
Splain 2,194 Editorials Team ·
I'll defer to the general guidelines on Reed's SNES thread where the normal/medium difficulty is the standard, taking into consideration whatever the default is, and whether or not the endings change. In this case, Outrun defaults to "Normal" so we'll go with that.

If you have it in you to take Terminator 2 on, you could knock it out for two different websites at once. Imagine the glory! 4 hours ago, Splain said: @bronzeshield Wow, neat to look through that thread, makes me feel silly for starting a new one here lol. I should go through and gather up the requirements they used. Feel free to ask me (I'm the one who runs the thread). Most of the games were straightforward but a few have no win condition (Blockout and Ishido come to mind) or a weird win condition. One game even needed someone to go spelunking into the ROM, as accessing the final level requires a password that was only broadcast on cable in the 1990s! Also note that there are older versions of the thread from 2013, when we first started the project, and 2014, when we added PAL/Sega CD/32X games to the mix; I think those are linked in the OP. After that point we just reused the same thread. Edited November 14, 2019 by bronzeshield
Gaia Gensouki 743 Member ·
I once tried Lemmings. But that game has so many levels, that I gave up after completing the frist mode. Powerball is really difficult and/or I don't get it. The enemies just make mince meat out of you and I never got to score a goal. What would be the victory conditions for these games? Maybe I'll clear a game or two on the weekend, but I'm mostly still busy with SNES games.

I played that game as a kid on DOS, and I loved it, but it got really hard. And that was with a mouse... I can't imagine doing some of those levels with a d-pad. But the win condition in the other threads is to at least finish the hardest levels. There's a version on NES, SNES, and even Game Boy and Atari Lynx. And I believe they all have the same levels, or at least a huge amount of overlap. It gets done on NES every year (or almost), so it seems like it should be doable on everything. I definitely want to check it out, at least. Powerball looks like it has a league mode, with a password system. I assume there's an ending at the end of that. It also looks completely bonkers. And should I go ahead and strike these from the list? Art Alive Chavez II Miracle Piano Teaching System Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends Wacky Worlds Creativity Studio I'd strike all of those, yes -- except maybe Miracle Piano which can sort of be beaten, as TMR demonstrated, though the consensus still seems to be to leave it off most "Can VGS beat..." lists. Irritatingly I used to have most of a Miracle Piano set and got rid of it. For Ishido, I played until I was able to use all the stones in my pouch, which is the game's end state. For Blockout, I cleared one story of blocks on the hardest level (10) in all three default modes and called that done. Trying to remember which other games caused problems. I know there are a few ones yet unbeaten that would, e.g. Championship Pro-Am which has no ending but loops after a finite number of courses (24 I think?). M-1 Abrams Battle Tank is another mystery -- as far as we can tell, the campaign mode expects you to pull a crazy marathon to get it done, but we don't know if you get a proper ending for doing so. Also, I can give you win conditions for all the tennis games: - Andre Agassi Tennis: win all 16 matches (in one sitting!!) to get a message from Andre - ATP Tour Championship Tennis: play three seasons to get the game's ending (I think you have to finish in the top 8 to qualify for the year-end championships, and win those each year) - David Crane's Amazing Tennis: win a tournament (4 matches) - Davis Cup Tennis: finish the season as world #1 to get the game's ending; you can skip the Davis Cup matches - IMG International Tour Tennis: win everything, get an ending - Jennifer Capriati Tennis: complete one loop, I think? You may need to do a second loop with the password it gives you (GRAND.SLAM) to access hard mode. Passwords aren't used to save progress - Pete Sampras Tennis: beat all opponents in career mode - Wimbledon Championship Tennis: complete four loops (win the tournament 4x, IIRC) 3 hours ago, Splain said: Lemmings... yeah. It'd be great if you're up for taking a crack at either of those. I think you have to clear all difficulties -- in essence, all levels -- to beat Lemmings, and I don't think any of them are accessible out of order. Powerball looks likely to have an ending, yeah. It's supposed to be rather decent, IIRC. 3 hours ago, MovieTom said: Whoa! What game was this? TNN Outdoors Bass Tournament '96! As per the manual: "You will need a password to play in the final tournament. The password will be given out on April 27, 1996 at 12 noon on TNN Outdoors Television." There's no way to access it in-game otherwise; really crazy design. Fortunately Tony H on Sega-16 was able to find the password -- JJJBASS -- in the ROM. 1
bronzeshield 254 Member ·
California Games was another one. Goati (https://www.twitch.tv/goati_) discovered that the game has actual endings to the BMX and Skating games, so those should be achieved. He ended up getting those endings and getting the high score in all events. As far as we know the "Compete in All Events" mode doesn't offer anything special, i.e. you don't get a unique ending for winning in that mode, though we haven't tried savestating through a perfect game to verify it. Goati also "beat" the Menacer 6-game cartridge. None of the games have an ending, and Whack Ball and Ready, Aim, Tomatoes are the only ones with a somewhat clear-cut amount of content to be experienced (Whack Ball clearly has five levels before it loops; Ready, Aim, Tomatoes loops somewhere in the teens IIRC?). More about it here. Edited November 15, 2019 by bronzeshield
AverageOliver98 666 Member ·
While the true final bosses of Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic 3D Blast are locked behind collecting the Chaos Emeralds, should collecting them be a requirement for beating Sonic 1, 2, 3, and K in 2, games that just have different end screens? Personally I'd vote that it's not required if it doesn't unlock more content. But I'm open to other opinions if people have them. Lemmings has different difficulties you can play through, meaning you get different puzzles depending on which you chose. The hardest one looks like it's called Sunsoft mode, and you can skip straight to that one. I'm guessing the game doesn't care if you've beaten any previous difficulties, since the passwords you get are exactly the same every time. Sunsoft mode is insane. I was looking at Ishido to see if it was the same game as the Game Boy one, and yes, it is. And I managed to empty the pouch on that first try. Even got two "4-ways." Very unsatisfying ending, lol. The GB version gives you an ending screen at least. Makes me wonder if I did something wrong. There are options to get hints or view the contents of the pouch, but I didn't do either. Shrug. bronzeshield 254 Member ·
Yeah, that's all you get for Ishido -- not much of an ending. But emptying your pouch is essentially victory, with maximizing your score/getting a lot of "4-ways" (but not 11-ways!) as the only self-imposed challenge beyond that.
