Beat Every Game Boy Game - 2023

Let's keep playing Game Boy games in 2023!

Rules:
- Games must be started and finished no earlier than January 1, 2023, EST.
- No cheat codes, game genie codes, glitches etc. may be used
- Emulation is allowed, but no save states, altered roms, or any advantages over playing on original hardware. (Super Game Boy and Game Boy Player are allowed.)
- Game saves and passwords can only be used if they are obtained from a fresh new game, started this year.
- Photos are not required, but they're fun.

Scoring:
Scoring is based on how many times each game has been beaten in a previous year's thread. Each game beaten is worth at least 1 point. Games that have not been beaten every year since 2013 are worth an extra .5 points per non-beaten year. Games that have never been beaten are worth an additional half-point. So each game ranges from 1 to 6 points, as shown in the table below.

This year, anyone is welcome to report games they've beaten, even if someone else has already beaten it. It will be worth a reduced amount of points if it's not the first clear of the year.

Requirements:
    - 100% completion is not required, thus the default or “normal” difficulty is typically fine.
    - Definite ending or credits screens are king. If a game has a “bad” ending and a “good” ending, the “good ending” is typically required.
    - If a game loops indefinitely, only one loop is required.
    - Specific requirements are given for each game, though they're always a work in progress. I tried to anchor the requirements for trickier "unending" games to actual in-game metrics, such as high score tables, obvious loops, etc. So if some requirements seem too easy/hard, it’s because I didn’t find a better anchor.
    - Games with indisputable endings might only say “Complete,” but I’d like to eventually include how many levels/stages/rounds are in the game, as that can be useful for first-timers. (e.g., Complete All 8 Stages)
    - If anything looks off, or if you want to challenge/discuss these metrics, please do so.

Games not in the list:
- Wisdom Tree unofficial releases
- Pokemon Yellow: due to the presence of a GBC header in the ROM of Pokemon Yellow, it is included in the GBC completion thread.
- 5 Infogenius titles: These are too much fun and would spoil the rest of the list.
- Mortal Kombat 1&2 (single cart) : Games tracked individually, since each has its own cart
- Asteroids/Missile Command: Games tracked individually, since each has its own cart
- Centipede (Accolade) and Centipede (Majesco) are consolidated into one entry, since gameplay is identical across both titles.

Centipede/Millipede and Race Days each include entire games that exist on their own cart. Completion requirements focus only on the modes that aren’t already represented on those other carts.

Japanese games?
Sure! Beat any Japanese game you like. They're not listed out, but any game you beat will get added to the very bottom of the chart, and they'll be worth 3 points each. Since translations of Japanese titles vary from source to source and person to person, I'll include the product code with each Japanese title to avoid confusion.

The first Donkey Kong Land is all done. The other two games are certainly more polished in terms of controls, hit detection, etc., but this is certainly the most creative of the DKL titles. I always felt like the other two borrow much too heavily from their console counterparts (especially the second game). I also really appreciated the Analogue Pocket's bigger screen for this one - I could actually see some of the hints for where the secret areas are. It's been a few years since I last played this game, and I ended up enjoying more than I was expecting.

Last year, I couldn't contribute anything until January 30th because Wave Race took so dang long to knock out.  I'm happy to report that I already have two under my belt for January.

Cool Spot is done again

MgFPCX4.jpg

Sadly, I can report that beating the game on hard while collecting all letters of "Uncola" but not using any continues will NOT produce a different ending than simply beating the game on hard in any other way.  The game is pretty fun overall but the Game Boy version does suffer from having the smaller screen. That creates more blind jumps than should be present. Also, enemies only take damage if they are on screen, so there will be a lot of cheap hits (especially from the mice that can throw from off-screen before you know they're there, but you can't hit them back). The toy level with the water is garbage BS. If you're shooting to get 100% on the levels, just know that there's one level where it is literally impossible to get every spot/dot (someone messed up the programming or hit detection and left something on the wrong side of barriers). Also search and jump everywhere because a lot are hiding inside or behind the backgrounds, completely invisible.  I also don't think it's possible to 100% the bonus stages at all, but I got close on the first one. I'm glad to be done with it, but it's probably one of the better corporate tie-in games.

I also had time to beat Dig Dug tonight

New Mode

37HdPJJ.jpg

Old Mode (if it's like other versions, the last unique item is on level 18 with the pineapple - at least that's what I was told this was supposed to be).

I really enjoyed most of my time with this game. Old mode was incredibly easy after playing new mode. New mode was a nice, natural feeling extension of the Dig Dug formula and each grouping of 10 levels ramped up before easing back down. There were 4 boss battles, but they all consisted of the exact same thing - pump the bomb X times without getting hit. Only the last one posed a challenge and that was more because the controls are a little wonky and force movements in the wrong direction if you're midway between two tiles of the invisible grid. I also experienced some issues with being pushed in a certain direction when trying to disconnect the pump, even if I was holding a different one on the d-pad (like going up when I'm holding left).  The last 3 or 4 levels of new mode were obnoxious and full of situations that felt like unavoidable deaths, but most of the game was a great time.

Next up for me is Alien 3, which I hope to start tomorrow.

The only way I beat that game was by camping on the lowest number I could get to, so that the CPU camps on the next one up (or down) allowing me to stare at the board and make a plan for the next move, and how I can strategically get a bingo against a CPU who moves near-perfectly but unintelligently to each next number. It gets tedious, but it's decently entertaining. Maybe I'll replay that one next year 😄

All right, Panel Action Bingo is done:

@Floating Platforms I did indeed play using numbers! And @Splain, the method you describe is exactly what I had to do for Levels 26-30 and 56-60: sit on the panel with the lowest (or highest) number, plan out my strategy for the next few moves, carry it out, and then repeat.

The rounds with hazards are actually easier since the CPU actually has obstacles in its way, but then again, it will happily refuse to claim the next available panel if it can see that you'll get 2-3 panels in return!

No idea why the game doesn't autoload the next password after you lose. Speaking of passwords, my normal password for Level 60 was RPCBKSPH, but on one occasion I gave up and tanked the last life, and then I got the password QPBBJSNH, which also worked. I wonder what triggers that?

Too long for what it is, I guess, but I gained grudging respect for the game when it got so hard in the last part of each loop and forced me to come up with better strategies.

I'm working on Bubble Bobble. Does anyone know how the good / bad endings work in the Game Boy port? (Or if there are even different endings at all?)

So, it's a little weird on Game Boy. The game loops twice basically. Beat it once and at the end of the credits you get the password to keep going and the game is a little harder/different (bosses take more hits, slightly different enemies, etc). The story cutscene ending itself is the exact same for both loops, but the credits will be different. I don't think we require the second loop for this thread though

I should have beaten Alien 3 tonight, but I ran into a glitch after defeating the queen. The item I needed de-spawned and I couldn't roll credits.  I have the general idea of how to do everything figured out though. I'm not playing tomorrow, but Wednesday night I should be able to finish this up pretty quick and then I'll start on my next game: Beavis and Butt-Head

Sick - thanks! Sounds like I can manage that!

James Bond 007

I'm really looking forward to James Bond as I hear it's pretty dang good and I've never touched it.

I'm sorry that I bailed on finishing that one last year.  I'm about 80% through it.  It's alright for an adventure-style game.  Maybe my interests have changed, but I enjoyed Xenon2 way more as a new attempt at a game.  I just found Bond to be a bit better than "Meh", but maybe it was because I was hyped for it too.  It's a fine game but it's a tad buggy and feels more like an early GB game, rather than a late entry for the console.

Meh is the worst review I've heard of it so far (but I also haven't really gone searching too much).  I think I have a higher tolerance for mediocre stuff, though. So, if the game is kinda blah, but has good concepts or other qualities that I find redeeming but maybe the execution is a bit off, I'll still be pretty happy.  We'll see in a few games at least.

I've retired from the GB at this point, but I'm still happy to see the list of completion requirements so accurate. The only complaint I have is that Dr. Mario needs to be completed on level 20 High to see the game's ending. A lot of people have never actually seen Dr. Mario's ending where the virus' are taken away. It's a little different in the Game Boy version, but the ending is still a definitive "Good ending" where the virus' are defeated. I won't spoil that version with a video, but here is the NES version's ending. (Which honestly is way better)

What I remember about Dr. Mario is that all the endings are a little bizarre, and since there's no "now try hard mode!" or anything, the middle difficulty is defaulted as the requirement. I had never thought of it as showing the viruses being "defeated." Hmm...

I liked James Bond 007, it's a solid adventure with depth that's hard to find on GB. You can tell it was built on the Link's Awakening engine. My biggest complaint was that I got lost and confused a couple times, since there's no map and some of the instructions are kind of obtuse. But I made it through.  I remember the satisfaction of getting things right, using the right weapons, etc. 7/10.

There's a "best" ending, but you definitely have to know what you're doing ahead of time in order to get it, so it's not required. Like, you have to talk to the right people at various points in the game, there's no secret boss or anything.

Good luck with In Your Face, lol.

I'll be interested to see what you think of Prophecy the Viking Child. There are some cool things about that game, and also some glaring stinkers in some of the core gameplay mechanics. I legitimately don't know what I think if it, so I usually default to "this game stinks" but it's really not terrible.

The general rule of thumb used in most of these threads is that the best ending isn't necessarily required unless the game specifies to play on a higher difficulty, or you miss out on part of the game by playing on a lower level.  So long as an ending is achieved, then there's no need to torture yourself...unless you want to.

Examples (off the top of my head): Double Dragon II (NES), Little Samson (NES), Contra III (SNES), TMNT IV (SNES).

It's up to you of course, though in the GB one they're a little more definitely killed than in the NES one. In the GB version the UFO starts to take them away, but as they rise into the ship, they get eaten by a giant fish that swims by, and the UFO panics and flies off.

If the general mindset for the threads though is that best ending isn't required, then don't mind me. 🙂

The point value for Quarth is 4.5 by the way. I wonder if the last time it was completed was the time I did it years ago. It was certainly the hardest GB game I beat.

Oh interesting. I guess I'll likely be beating James Bond a couple times then. Once totally blind and then again to get that best ending.

Yeah, these next four are quite the variety, which is what I like and try to shoot for. I don't even have the manual for Viking Child to get a small sense of what it will be like. The only info I have is that it appears to be 3-4 hours to beat, but I'm sure I'll find a way to mess that up. Fingers crossed I can get to it next week.

I don't remember if anyone beat it last year, but I did beat it early on in 2021. I had to map out one of the levels from my video replay to see where power-up possibilities were. Beast of a game, but still addictively fun. I think it's certainly currently in my top 5 hardest so far. Wave Race takes my #1 spot and Hyper Lode Runner is probably #2
