  • The title was changed to Definitive Top 50 N64 Games

That's funny: I only own four N64 games, and it's the top four on this list.  This console's library is so strange for having such incredible AAA all-time greats at the top, followed by mountains and mountains of crap!

That's pretty funny, and yeah there's a clear drop in popularity from #13 to #14 percentage wise.

I'd expect the killer apps to have a huge dropoff, but not something so polarizing as 13 to 14.

Crunching the numbers, it's a 22.52% drop between 13 and 14....that's HUGE considering there are no more major drops after that.

Sold Title Dropoff
2510 Super Mario 64
2147 GoldenEye 007 14.46%
1946 Mario Kart 64 9.36%
1472 Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 24.36%
1292 Donkey Kong 64 12.23%
1193 Star Fox 64 7.66%
1146 Super Smash Bros. 3.94%
979 Pokémon Stadium 14.57%
852 Diddy Kong Racing 12.97%
791 Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 7.16%
693 Banjo-Kazooie 12.39%
658 Perfect Dark 5.05%
644 Pokémon Snap 2.13%
499 Yoshi's Story 22.52%
486 Mario Party 2.61%
466 Star Wars Episode I: Racer 4.12%
465 Wave Race 64 0.21%
448 Mario Party 2 3.66%
427 Pokémon Stadium 2 4.69%

Neat data! So it's the most sought-after games, intersected with perception of how "fairly" each game is priced, right? If high demand drives prices up, that lowers demand.

For example this chart doesn't line up exactly with most popular ROM downloads on... a certain website. Most Purchased doesn't necessarily mean Most Popular, it's just one measure of popularity.

Oooh, I didn't think of ROM site data.

But, maybe ROM sites that publicly post that kind of stuff have a feedback loop? I dunno.

I know this data is *SOMETHING* good, I'm just not entirely sure what it exactly reflects. Some deep diving needs to, and can be done with it for sure.

Yoshi's Story beating every Mario Party is the biggest shocker on that list.

Mario Party 1 unfortunately might be a little bit higher.

Because of the filters I have to exclude any mentions of Mario Party 2 and 3, or ALL mentions of 2 and 3.

So if someone sells "Mario Party 1, 2, and 3" in a bundle then it gets cut out of the search results.

Also, if someone searched for "Mario Party 1 and Zelda Ocarina of Time 2 game bundle" then it gets cut out too....

I went through and counted the games I thought were objectively good in the library. Out of 296 (NA) I counted around 60-65 games that I could objectively call good. Granted, I haven't played others that also could be good. But I figured that's around 20% good games, 80% unknown or bad games. Kinda crazy to think about it that way. Only my opinion of course.

As much as I unironically like and play N64 games, I have to say this is actually pretty fair, lol. My number is a little higher, but I was expecting you to say something like there's only 5 good games like everyone else.

I wonder how many of those numbers are conflated by bootlegging.  I could be wrong, but this seems like the most bootlegged system out there.  Maybe the GBC/A has more bootleg games, but I'm not sure.

Oh definitely. But I'd say the bootlegs have made the numbers closer to the theoretical "true" popularity ranks. If every game was nice and cheap, what would everyone buy?

this is sales data?

kuz it might not be like the best games......just that people bought it.

Anyway, anyone looking for a good "hidden" gem, play buck bumble!

Edit:  Oh, you are welcome for this, and i rate this game higher than all but like 5 of those 😉 maybe @Reed Rothchild will get me to rate these someday.....its a lot of damn work to go through these games though......

Spoiler

I tried to eliminate as much as that as possible. If you look at the raw data you can see I removed repros, labels, custom cases, etc. from search results

Interesting stats but ultimately missing so many great games, most likely due to them either been scarce on ebay or really expensive now.

I'd say there is at least 100-120 good to great games on the N64 and probably another 30 or so passable games that would be fun to play for an hour or two but nothing I'd commit to.

That's a pretty good percentage considering the library is just shy of 300 in the US.

I’ve never been more conflicted over a console than the N64. It’s got some of my most beloved gaming memories and favorite games but after that it just drops off and I do not have much reverence for the library as a whole. I love the system, but I dislike the library at the same time. It’s so weird.
