2022 VGS NES Weekly Contest - Kung Fu!

I tried more point pressing and got three 12th-guy bonuses, but also took more damage. The giant was a closer fight than usual and the magician took me down. Not higher than my prior score, but breaking 50 and 100k at earlier points in the game.

Oh no! Is it Covid? I was sick with Omicron for two weeks.

No, I had that back in January. This is viral bronchitis. I seem to catch it every year. The congestion is awful, but it seems to be slowly clearing up. I have a little more energy than I did earlier in the week, but I'm still pretty sore from all of the coughing.

Cool, I'm glad you're feeling better. I hope you can get in some runs of Kung Fu.

I know I don't want to play any more Kung Fu for a long while. Definitely had my fill lol.

I'm still feeling a bit rough since the congestion hasn't fully cleared up, but hopefully it won't be too much longer. I'll give it a shot if I'm able over the weekend, but my reflexes are pretty dull right now between the medications and lack of sleep.

I just remembered that this was the first game that I played in the weekly contests way back in 2016. It was also my introduction to Kung Fu. I got 14th place. It was not a one life contest. My score right now would have gotten me 6th, very close to 5th.

Well, this was a lot easier than I remembered it.  Had a bit of trouble getting past the second floor, but once I did I managed to run through the rest of the loop, albeit by the skin of my teeth.  I don't really like the game enough to try and improve on this, but I'm definitely happy to add it to my beaten list!

Recovery is still slow, so I probably won't get any runs in before tomorrow. Hopefully next week I can try to improve on my personal best SNES Final Fight score. It's odd that TG allows you to use the Final Fight or Final Fight Guy when FFG has invincibility and 1 up items not in the original. You are also allowed to increase the default difficulty which I'm pretty sure just makes the enemies do more damage in the original, but in FFG, it replaces some enemies with stronger versions as well as adding more that don't show up on the standard difficulty allowing for a much higher score.

Score update page 1. Finally cleared 2 loops! The magician on loop 2 had my number for too long. Travelling tomorrow so thats probably all I got, but Im happy. Comes close to my high score for a full game on 1 life!

Great score!  I've honed my point-scumming skills, but have failed to beat the second loop magician since doing so... and the one time I did beat him, it was when I was just trying to get the game down so I wasn't point-scumming yet (that's my current 400k game).  I'll give it a couple more attempts tomorrow to try and beat you, but you may already have my number, for the "not mbd" challenge anyway...

Well @mbd39, since the only guy in the game who could beat me was that damn magician, I decided to keep playing to see if I could top your current score.  I had a great run, and got to the fourth loop Magician with full health, and...   he absolutely annihilated me, but not before I got 750k 😛  So if you've been keeping a better score in your pocket, go ahead and post it, because I'm done - for real this time!

Good job. I got over 750k in practice before the contest but wasn't able to match it during the week. And then after I got 700k I got burnt out on Kung Fu. I did give another go today but it wasn't happening.

You're going to beat me at TMNT2 as well. I'm good at NES beat em ups over all, but I suck at the Turtles games for some reason. I'm not a big fan of them either.

We played my best tmnt game, manhattan project, year before last. I even got beat by a shooter specialist in @docile tapeworm

I traveled to FL most of the day. 5Got the nes hooked up, but not working yet. Only a cable remote, so I cant find a way to get to input selection. Glad I didnt have a ton of time to sink today. Wouldn't have come close to 1 and 2 scores. Sick runs to morbus and mbd

Isn't that the game where each enemy kill only gives a single point?  If so, whoever wins is going to win by a very small margin of points, and it'll be the lowest scoring game all year.  Hopefully it's a one-life contest so we don't have to play for half an hour just to see if we're having a good run or not...

I still have never beat shreddar without a second player. Gave it a pretty hard go about 6-7 years ago, failed, and havent played it again since. Have you cleared it?

According to my NES completions file, I beat the game with a chick named Dawn in November of 2008, and I'm pretty sure I haven't touched it since.  I know for sure I've never attempted a 1p run, since it seems to lose all of it's co-op party appeal when you don't have someone on the couch beside you as you blaze your way through the game...
