And is it different for control pads vs arcade sticks? -CasualCart 5 1 Link to comment https://www.videogamesage.com/forums/topic/10136-convex-or-concave-buttons/ Share on other sites
RH | 5,413
Needs to be a poll. This could be like balls vs. bats. I'm a concave guy but the preference is narrow between the two. 1 Link to comment https://www.videogamesage.com/forums/topic/10136-convex-or-concave-buttons/#findComment-267796 Share on other sites

DarkTone | 1,039
Don't mind either, but gun to my head? Convex. I try to get them on every modded arcade stick I get. 2 Link to comment https://www.videogamesage.com/forums/topic/10136-convex-or-concave-buttons/#findComment-267818 Share on other sites

Kguillemette | 1,673
Tough to say. Playing NES with convex buttons doesn't feel right for example. I feel like there is just more precision, perhaps? Like a better grip from finger to button? Cruising a more laid back modern adventure would feel weird with concave buttons. It might just be a comfort thing? TDIRunner | 2,998
I always thought the point was to have both so it's easier to know which button is which without having to look at them. Same type of reason why F and J have those little bumps on them. 1 2 Link to comment https://www.videogamesage.com/forums/topic/10136-convex-or-concave-buttons/#findComment-267846 Share on other sites

Tanooki | 5,256
Honestly don't get the preference, I'm fine either way outside of the arcade. There though, I don't think I've really used a machine with a convex button other than some of those ticket games so I never thought of it, but largely in the US they're concave. Going to go with the smurfs answer -- all hail the SNES as it did both. 1 Link to comment https://www.videogamesage.com/forums/topic/10136-convex-or-concave-buttons/#findComment-268095 Share on other sites
GPX | 1,439
I never knew there was a concave or a convex button. I simply knew them as “button”. Golly, you learn something new every day! To answer the question: whichever causes less friction and finger burns. 1 Link to comment https://www.videogamesage.com/forums/topic/10136-convex-or-concave-buttons/#findComment-268179 Share on other sites
AstralSoul | 524
Concave buttons always seem to hurt my thumbs less during extended gaming sessions but ultimately it really doesn't make much of a difference. 1 Link to comment https://www.videogamesage.com/forums/topic/10136-convex-or-concave-buttons/#findComment-268188 Share on other sites
RH | 5,413
One system or device that I've used had the four option buttons that were concave, and tilted into each other. This made a bowl-shape for all of the buttons, and it made it easy roll your finger around buttons. The affect was subtle but it made multi-button movements much more fluid. I cannot recall where I've seen this but that was my favorite option. I think it was on a drone controller, but it was shaped very much like a game controller. 2 Link to comment https://www.videogamesage.com/forums/topic/10136-convex-or-concave-buttons/#findComment-268198 Share on other sites
croagunk | 798
I don’t really have a preference at all. If I had to choose, I’d say convex because I can use my fingernail to hit the button better than concave. 2 Link to comment https://www.videogamesage.com/forums/topic/10136-convex-or-concave-buttons/#findComment-268350 Share on other sites
JamesRobot | 6,256 Events Team ·
Concave for NES and arcade. Convex for all others including Super Nintendo. Super Famicom controllers were superior to SNES. 1 Link to comment https://www.videogamesage.com/forums/topic/10136-convex-or-concave-buttons/#findComment-268352 Share on other sites
drxandy | 3,324
On an arcade stick with bigger buttons I like convex, easier to make inputs for me A smaller pad with 4 action buttons I like both (totally like everyone on the SNES train), but if it's two button like the nes I would be fine either way, but the concave can dig into my thumbs with long gameplay. 2 Link to comment https://www.videogamesage.com/forums/topic/10136-convex-or-concave-buttons/#findComment-268932 Share on other sites

TDIRunner | 2,998
I completely forgot about this until I posted this picture in "The Ultimate Controller" thread. Webhead123 | 831
I generally prefer concave on both console controllers and arcade decks but I think the Super Nintendo did the absolute GOAT by combining concave and convex for tactile bliss. 1 Link to comment https://www.videogamesage.com/forums/topic/10136-convex-or-concave-buttons/#findComment-272723 Share on other sites
