Beginning to think nobody cares

Ever since I began making Game Boy games, I've found that hardly anyone cares about them. Is it because my games are bad? I don't know. I keep wishing for feedback, but I'm pretty much pessimistic at this point. I've made five levels of this game, but it apparently doesn't matter if nobody except me looks at them. I made a whole bunch of changes and bug fixes. I found that if you die on level 5, there's a small chance the game will crash. I've found that on my Frank the Fruit Fly game too. I won

I need your opinion on something.

I want to put a lemon in for Frank to bite and gain health in before the final "battle." (I call it a battle even though it'll be just Frank dodging shots for two minutes.) I designed two lemons. For those who haven't looked closely at a lemon, it has these tiny little bumps on them, which is what I was trying to convey. But what color should I make them? The one on the left has them middle gray (like the grass) and the one on the right has them white (like the background). I can't decide which

My history teacher ate lemons.

Today I worked on music for the title screen of my new Game Boy game. This is all I'll do today because I don't feel like working very hard on things. There's all these projects I start. And I finish like 25% of them. And I work really hard on them and I still don't get much done. I want to take a minute to talk about hemmorhoids. There's this disc-shaped bump up my butt. Or at least I think it's disc-shaped. It feels like it anyway. Sometimes I'd have bloody stools. But those we

Moves counter

I thought I'd be done after making a lot of changes, but I thought of one more thing I could put in the game: A moves counter! That was missing! So I put one in. This was surprisingly easy to add in the game. I made it so after you move 255 times, the move counter stays at 255. Haven't actually needed to use 255 moves. And I hope the puzzles don't need 255 moves to complete. I like to think of the moves counter as the "score" for this game. But the lower the number the better. So

Frank the fruit fly - 11/20/2022

Today finds me spending part of my time awake working on Frank the Fruit Fly. Frank must pass through these walls on the roof (I don't know why there's walls on the roof except to impede Frank!) while avoiding those pesky bigger flies. I think they should be called moths, though. And with this, level 5 is finished. Bank 5 (where level 5 data is) is only 10% free, so I will make a level 6, an ending, and a game over screen, and then call it done. I still have not run into the game crash

Game Boy homebrew

Where can I buy physical copies of homebrew games for the Game Boy? I've been working on GoSub and it's making me want to try out some other Game Boy homebrew games. I made a couple of changes to the border. I think it looks better. I also made the sub fall apart when it crashes. It adds a touch of realism instead of just stopping when it crashes. But I think of the poor crew drowning when I hit something when I test it now. Also, would anyone like to publish it when it's done? Th

Mean Santa

Tim Duarte and I are working on bringing his game Mean Santa to the Game Boy. I have been programing it and he has been giving me feedback about it. Not that I'd get it completed by Christmas, but perhaps we'll do a Christmas in July and release it then or something. I have been making it work for Game Boy Color and Super Game Boy, as well as just regular Game Boy, all in one cartridge. These screenshots are from the Game Boy Color mode. The Super Game Boy mode has its own border and color

Designing Men

Well, man anyway. (Although I'm fat enough to be considered two men.) I did it. I designed the final level of Ugly Uppity Umpire for Game Boy. Now it has 50 levels. I started last October, so it took about a year of off and on work to design them. Like about one level per week. Although I made the last two levels today. Now what I need to do is make some sort of ending and I'd like to put in a Super Game Boy border. I have room enough to do both since I have two unused banks left. It's been

level 17

Today I made level 17 of Ugly Uppity Umpire. Now I'm continuing to work on this and other things since it got cooler. But I am so bored. I guess I'll go through the Game Boy collection. I can't add to it because all the listings are either stuff I don't want or stuff that is too expensive on eBay. I don't know, life seems so hard at this point when all you are all the time are bored and sleepy.

Cursor working

So I woke up at about 11 p.m. or so. I immediately went to work on this after getting up, eating breakfast and taking my pills. It took about two hours or so, but I finally got a grid and a cursor that moves around. The problems were related to how to convert the numbers of the cursor's x and y position so they could be used in the lookup table I made for the grid. One difference between "Lazlo's Leap" and this game are seen even though it's very VERY early on (and may not get finished

Q is for quit

I've decided to stop working on Q. It just doesn't seem to be a very interesting game. I tried to make a version of Venture for the Odyssey 2, but I deemed it impossible due to the entering and exiting points of each room and tracking them. I even got rid of one room and it still was too much. So I've decided to quit Odyssey 2 programming and return to my Game Boy games. Even though they will never get published. I don't know why. Was "Frank the Fruit Fly" crappy? I returned to the Ugly Upp

Boss beginning

My stomach still hurts. It's not so much my stomach, it's more hemmorhoids. I've tried various things to ease the pain. Neosporin, Trader Joe's skin cream. I'm going to try petroleum jelly next. I wish I could stop needing to poop so it can heal more. To try to get my mind off it, I've been programming the beginning of the final boss battle in Frank the Fruit Fly. Level 6 couldn't go on much longer, I only had 17% of bank 6 free. So I decided to put the final boss fight in bank 7. Bank 7 is my l

Bird legs.

I put a bird in Frank the Fruit Fly. At first I tried to show its legs, like so:  I wonder what happens to birds' legs when they're flying. I decided then to get rid of the legs and I like the legless result better. I assume birds tuck their legs under themselves while in flight and then stick them out when they're about to land. As you can see, the bird is flapping its wings, a nice little addition I made to attempt to make the bird more lifelike. I also discovered something

Frank the Fruit Fly - 11/30/2022

It's the last day of November. The wind and rain is sure coming around now. Electricity kept. So I worked on Frank the Fruit Fly again. I put in an idea I had where Frank moves right automatically and you need to move the trees out of Frank's way. So I did that. I wasn't sure how this screen idea would turn out, but it turned out pretty good I think. There's lots of unused space, the bottom half isn't used for anything, which is kind of weird, but I had to do it this way so it would be

Autosave

So I was playing Kirby's Dream Land 2. It's nice that the game automatically saves what level you're on AND which doors have been beaten. It kind of reminded me of Frank the Fruit Fly. But, it didn't autosave. The player had to press Select whenever he wanted to save. Seeing as how you can't go back in the game, I wanted to have an autosave feature as well. So I did some deleting of code that requires a "select" press mid-game to save, and instead told the game to save when a new level has been

Super Game Boy border

I have been working on this almost all morning long. I started at about 1 a.m. and it's after 9 a.m. now. But I finally made a Super Game Boy border for GoSub GB. I had to think a litlte when I was designing it. I thought about what I wanted it to look like. I took the sprites from the game, enlarged them, colored them good and this is what I ended up with (eventually) What do you think? I found and fixed a bug pertaining to the space character. I tested it on a real Super Game Boy and

Ending works.

Yesterday I worked on the ending. I put it in. I composed music for it and put it in. Went to sleep early because I was sleepy for some reason. I woke up 12 hours later. I tested everything. It works great now. If you want to test the game, PM me. I will respond faster on AtariAge since I'm on there more. I will have to give a link since we can't put attachments in PMs here for some reason. I'm not going to put an image of the ending here because I want people to play the game for themselve

Changes to Frank the Fruit Fly.

First off, I managed to put in the wanderer enemy in Robot Ron in 2084. But I've decided to take a small break from that. I moved on to the Game Boy. While having an insomnia bout, I managed to get in a Super Game Boy border to Frank the Fruit Fly. Then I slept about all day Saturday. I made some more changes to that game after I woke up. I changed the title screen after realizing there was no copyright date on the game. I also changed the music in level 2 because it sounded quite weird wit

Frank the Fruit Fly box

The gnome thing for the celery game was not going to work. The speed of the gnomes got slower whenever the celery was moving and sped up again when he wasn't. I think that was a sign of me trying to put too much code into the game. I was really bored yesterday. I decided to see if I could make a box for my Game Boy game. I got a template for a GB box. Yesterday I worked on the front and today I worked on the back. This is the front I designed: I debated a long time against myself

Frank the fruit fly - changes.

I thought "I have some unused background tiles, so why not try to make the title screen a bit nicer?" So that's what I did. I replaced the text with the title spelled out using background tiles. I think it looks better. Especially since it wasn't centered with the text. Well, this isn't exactly centered either, since the title I wrote couldn't be, it's off by 1 pixel, but it still looks centered enough. I made contact with a guy who released my Virtual Boy game who says he may be able

A new Game Boy game.

I finished Frank the Fruit Fly some time ago. Now I need to work on something else. I played some Super Game Boy games a few hours ago, which led me to wanting to make another Game Boy game. So I made a nice little song and a nice little title screen for my new game. I kind of wanted the pineapple to be bigger, but space was limited since I needed to also put in the font and a few punctuation marks. But I have a problem: I don't know what the game should be about. I'm leaning towards a

The ending

So I finished the boss fight yesterday. I finished the game over screen this morning. Now all that needs to be done is work on the ending. In case you were wondering what the game over screen would look like in a game about a fruit fly, here it is. At which point, you press Start to go back to the title screen. I went here and was surprised to find 4 more replies about the lemon. I decided to keep the lemon like it was in the second reply because the Game Boy has four colors and i

Levels 1 & 2.

I was able to put the pineapples in the game. I made a couple of levels. The game is different from Lazlo's Leap in that you can jump over nothing. I made it like that to make creating puzzles easier. One thing you can't do is jump over a pineapple and land on another one. So that makes this puzzle harder. But it's still easy. This morning I worked on making another level, this time with four pineapples. I also added the ability to reset the puzzle you're on by pressing the S

Level 3, other changes

So I decided to put the level select screen at the title screen. You press up or down to select a game, then start to start it. I added a new level. which is in my opinion, the hardest one yet. I also added a short level completed jingle, a sound for successfully moving a pineapple, and a buzz for moves that aren't allowed. I'd like to either cut the music off or make a new song. Most likely I'll cut the music in game. I worked for about 6 hours on this this morning trying

Ran-over possum man: level 2

I am working on level 2 of Ran-Over Possum Man, my game I'm making for Game Boy. You can grab the latest version and play it here. Stuff I did this morning? I put in a test museum for Ran-Over Possum Man. I designed a bunch of room types so they all link together. That is something I need to do when I design the final museum layout. The layout of a finished museum will be much bigger and include the room where the world's oldest raisin was. That is the room you need to go to before you can
