Yum!

I wanted to work on a Game Gear game, but I didn't want to work on the updated burgers game. So I found some old game I was working on and stopped and picked back up on it. I still think it's really simple, though, but boredom trumps simplicity. This is the title screen for Yum! It's a very simple game, but it's like nothing you've played on the Game Gear before. Here is the gist: Various food keeps moving towards your hungry mouth. Pressing 1 closes the mouth and pressing 2 opens

Yum for Game Gear

Awhile back, I made a Game Boy game called "Yum!" It was more like the Atari 2600 game "Fast Food". Later, I thought up a game where you need to open and close the guy's mouth in order to eat (or avoid) food. Having no other title in mind, I decided to name it "Yum!" as well. It was originally called "Face It" but I thought that was kind of nondescriptive, while "Face Food" just didn't sound right. So now I am working on "Yum!" for the Game Gear. I tried simultaneously to make a Master Syst

YouTube video of HERTS: ZIR

I finished level 2 of my game I've been making. So I decided to make a little YouTube video to celebrate. Level 2 is a mysterious, eerie cave. So I decided to put in some eerie-sounding music. I went in to compose a song that sounded cavey and I think I did a good job. Level 1 (not shown in the video) is in the clouds, so I tried to make something that sounded carnival-like. Right now, bank 0 is 14% free, bank 1 is 7% free and bank 2 is 56% free. Which is okay since banks 3-7

Video games for the Game Gear.

I worked on my Game Gear game a little bit more. I made the following changes. moved the text in the title screen outside the cookie. made it so it's okay if you don't eat the burger. But eating it gives you an extra life, so it's good if you do. The burger will only appear if you have less than 2 lives remaining. made it so the burger appears less frequently. The way it was set up before it was really showing up a lot, even though it only appeared if a certain variable r

Testing begins

I finished up Hamburgers En Route To Switzerland 2 for Game Gear. Let me know if you'd like to test it. I need other pairs of eyes out looking for bugs in this thing. I'll send you the game and a list of expected behavior (so you can tell if something is wrong). What would be especially nice is if you have a Game Gear Everdrive and can test it on a real Game Gear. I have a Game Gear Everdrive and a working Game Gear so I'll be doing that as well. Or you can just use whatever emulator you play Ga

Redone

So I got all done redesigning all the levels. I got some feedback and I tried to put in an explosion sprite for when an enemy gets shot. I had my eye hurt because I was so angry because it wasn't working. So with my eye hurting I had to quit for the night. I woke up this afternoon and worked some more and I think I got it successfully in. I also changed it so the shooting enemies look different than the normal ones. I also decided to start with the milkshakes, then at level 4 introduce the pizza

Red score.

I couldn't sleep. So I decided to work on my game. I am keeping the realistic clouds in the game, but I noticed the score is kind of hard to read. So I thought I'd try making it a different color, like a bright red or something so it would be more readable on the screen. This is what I came up with: Once I had that done, I noticed that when an enemy chooses to shoot at you, if you shoot its bullet, it continues to fire at you. I didn't want this to happen. I wanted to have it choose wh

Palette change

So I played my Game Gear for the first time in a while. Man, orange is hard to see on a blue background. I tried to make it more visible by darkening the screen and it worked a little. I think the problem is the shape of the onion ring: It is hard to make an 8x8 O-shaped sprite visible like that. The nacho that the taco shoots is visible. I think putting a black border around the sprites like I did in the Virtual Boy game would not look as good if you actually have a color other than red.

Mountains are purple now.

With all this work on Mean Santa for the Game Boy... I thought I'd take a little time to work on Flying Hamburgers for the Game Gear as well. Today I added in the ability for the enemies to move up and down instead of just straight on. I am planning this out. levels 1-3: head on, regular speed levels 4-6: head on, regular or faster speed levels 7-9: up and down movement or head on level 10: a mixture of any of these. I have also decided to put

More burger work

I added a few things to Hamburgers. I added a pretzel that can shoot and moves randomly. The pretzel starts on level 11. It shoots potato chips at you. And since there is a level 11, I got rid of the message on the screen that said the level number. I figured it should say the level number instead of "level 2" when you're actually on level 12. So I just changed it to say "new level." This was apparently not easy to do. I had to spend a few hours trying to get two words to d

Life's a beach

Imagine laying on the nice sand at a tropical beach with palm trees, when suddenly a hamburger flies by trying to down a chocolate milkshake by shooting French fries at it. This is level 7 of my game I'm trying to make good. I spent almost all of yesterday trying to put in a second enemy but I ultimately couldn't because I had a couple of bugs come in. So I had to leave it at just one at a time. This picture was hard to do because it kept saying it had 18 colors. So I made it 18

Keep it simple some more

One thing I wanted to do was change the name of the game. I wanted it to be shorter. "Hamburgers En Route To Switzerland: Zurich In Reach" is quite a mouthful (no pun intended.) So I made it simpler. I think the title screen hamburger looks much better now. It should, since it is in lovely 4 bit color. And my name is in lowercase letters for a reason: To save space. It is made up in 10 8x8 pixel squares. If I were to capitalize the letters, it would be 11. And to make the burger more d

Keep it simple

So with GoSub finished I decided to go back to programming "Hamburgers En Route To Switzerland: Zurich In Reach" for Game Gear again. I looked at what I had. I thought to myself "That cave level looks too crowded and complex with all the colors." So I decided to simplify it. Now, normally when I (or anyone else, for that matter) simplify something, it usually looks more simple. But this time, I felt like simplifying the background was a good step to make it look better. This is what the cave lev

In the castle.

Decided that since I had power and I was bored to continue work on my Game Gear game I was making. I made some changes to level 10. It now looks like this:   Since I decided on wooden walls, it cheered up the hall a lot. Not that I wanted it to be cheery. I also put in some chandeliers in the hall. The portrait of the milkshake used to be a portrait of an old man. But then I decided "Who is that?" and people may read into the game more than I intended, I changed it to a portrait of a

Hot face

I woke up this morning. I noticed the left side of my face was all red and hot. But what was odd is that the right side of my face was fine. I kept occasionally feeling my face to see how hot it was, and it has been going down a little, and the redness has got down a little as well. But it's still there, just not as bad as it was when I got up a few hours ago. This never happened before. I have also been trying to get used to the new development studio for Game Boy I have been using with no

Hamburgers En Route To Switzerland: Zurich In Reach!

So I decided to retitle the game I was making for the Game Gear. Instead of "Hamburgers En Route To Switzerland 3" it's now Why the change? I got to thinking: If someone were to publish the game with the 3 in it, that would mean there would have to be a second one. But of course, the second one won't be published. I now think of the first two games as practice for this one. An outfit called Retro Circuits published the first one for a short time before they quit operations. So now I ha

Game Gear work

Today's work is on the Game Gear. Trying to spice up and make the cookie on the title screen of Yum to look better. This is what it was like before: And after a few hours' work, what it looks like now: I misplaced the cookie so my name is lower since they're both in the same picture. I'm going to leave it as is because I don't want to work on the title screen any more. I'll test this later on a real Game Gear when the mood strikes. I need to play my Game Gear more often.

Game Gear work

For the first time since September, I worked on a Game Gear game. I worked on the sequel to HERTS, HERTS2. Level 7 is the forest. Amazingly, I spent more time trying to draw a forest than coding the part of the game that handles the forest. I think I got it working though. Now I just need to add some level-specific code, music and boss. I tried to put in a picture of a forest I found on the internet, but it had too many colors and too many tiles, so I had to draw one. The result, while I wanted

Fun with hamburgers (Dec. 29, 2023)

What has happened since my last blog entry? I designed a few new levels for the hamburger game. Level 6 is the city. There are lots of skyscrapers in it. I don't know whether or not to make the score black or white on this level. Right now it's white, but I could easily change it to black if I want to. I don't know if I want to. Level 7 is the beach. I put a couple of palm trees on it. I also need to compose some music for it. I've been looking at samples for the

Clouds

Which do you like better? The realistic-looking clouds or the clouds I drew? Since Frank the Fruit Fly is done, I thought I'd revisit the Game Gear game I've been making. I made a new "game over" screen. and I made new music for level 1. I want to make new music for levels 3 and 4 as well. I've decided they weren't "serious sounding" enough so I need to redo them. I think I'll redraw levels 3 and 4 to make them more realistic. I also made the enemy's projectile keep moving af

changes

So I had to get a new cable box. My old one broke. My new one is stupid. It won't let me record broadcast stations because a stupid message about copyright comes up. I also made a few changes to my game. Most of them involve sound effects. Now I have uploaded a current file of Zurich In Reach to my website. Feel free to download and give feedback on how I'm doing with the game so far. Also, let me know if you see any bugs.
