Ugly Uppity Umpire - July 29, 2023

This was made before I changed the graphics to match the way he's walking, but anyway... I'm wondering why you need to give your phone number to put in a custom YouTube thumbnail. Has anyone reading this ever done that? What happened? Three more days until my doctor's appointment. The horrible thing about it is I need to fast for my blood test. When I wake up, I am really hungry. So I'm trying to make it so I wake up around 10 a.m. so when August 1 comes around I can just wak

Level 38 of Ugly Uppity Umpire

Gee, does all this talk about my butt hurting really warrant 15 comments? I just thought it would be interesting to share my trials and tribulations of my life. After all, that's what a blog does. And I have no one else to tell except those who read it. I still put neosporin on it even though it doesn't really help. 4 more days until my doctors visit. Anyway, to the purpose of today's blog. I added a teleportation device to Ugly Uppity Umpire. I wanted the guy to disappear off screen and th

Butt update

So I keep putting neosporin on it but it will not disappear. I actually can now sit without a whole bunch of pain as long as I have padding under my butt. I tried to sit on a wooden chair and it hurt more that way. Fortunately the chair in front of my computer has padding on it so I can sit for a long period of time now. So what do I do when I sit in front of my computer? This:       Despite all these screenshots I am not that far into the game yet. I got really bored of working on Ugl

Final Soldier [PC Engine]

Played through Final Soldier [PC Engine]. I actually cleared a space-shooter on normal difficulty without save-states - this is EXCITING!!! Final Soldier is Hudson Soft’s second Star Soldier game on the Japanese PC Engine (which, unlike Super Star Soldier and Soldier Blade, never got localized to the North American TurboGrafx-16). And while it may not garner the same acclaim as its brethren, I think it shines equally bright as a solid representative of the broader 16-bit vertical shoot-em-u

I want to sit without pain

I have a doctor's appointment in 10 days for something else. But now I have something to tell him. There's a huge bumpy rash on my butt. I thought it was getting better, but it got worse again. Every time I sit down, it hurts. I've been putting all sorts of cream on it: Neosporin, petroleum jelly, nothing seems to make it go away. So I guess I'll have to tell him about it and see what he can do about it. Which I'm not exactly happy about because I hate doctors. They should only be visited when p

Stupidman issue 2

One of the things I liked to do from a very early age was draw. No matter how crappy my drawings were, it was always fun to think of characters and direct their actions like an interactive comic book. I have over 550 issues of a comic book I started when I was ten called "Bill and George." With the advent of computers brought a semi-new way of drawing for me. I could get pictures off the internet, scan my comics, and then put those pictures in my comic. Even though I could have done so for years

Fruit Fly Fun update for July 17, 2023

I added a new enemy. There is now a big fly. It's still a fly but it's bigger than the normal fruit fly so it takes two hits to kill. The bigger fly can start appearing once you reach 200 points. I also added in a black and white mode so you can play in black and white. I don't know why I did this but here it is. After some code optimization I found all this space in the 2k code where I could use for different things. Unfortunately, this raised the scanline to 263, but it's a steady 26

Fruit Fly Fun update for July 13, 2023

I started out the day at midnight coding. I tried to go to sleep a few times but I'd just lay there sleepy wishing I was asleep. I finally got asleep at 5:30 a.m. But I thought of something I could try: use "STA WSYNC" a few times. So I woke up at about 5 p.m. and began work anew. And then I had to restart my computer for a stupid update. Half an hour later, I worked for about another couple of hours and I think I finally have a steady picture, at least in the Stella emulator. I added a few

Top 10 NES Soundtracks

Introduction I've been playing the NES since 1990 or so, and have played hundreds of games for it. As a result, I've heard a lot of good (and some bad) NES soundtracks that I still remember and think about often. I've listened to not only the original versions of these soundtracks, but also remixes and fan-made MIDI's (dating back to the early 2000's). The soundtracks are that good.  My Favorite NES Soundtracks 10.Battletoads Battletoads isn't just known for its dif

One bite.

I made it so the fruit fly will eat one bite of the banana and then fly away. I don't know why I enjoy making games with fruit flies in them, but oh well. I also decided to change the swatter to a more purple color because I thought its color was too similar to the hornet's color. I have 52 bytes left if I want this to stay a 2k game (which I do.) I figure I'd test it on my Atari 2600 once I call it finished, which I think I am very close to do. Of course I said it was finished before

Truxton (Tatsujin) [Sega Genesis]

Played Truxton (Tatsujin) [Sega Genesis]. Truxton is a bit of a cult-classic early 16-bit space-shooter, and I’ve had a secondhand affinity for it ever since I started watching Classic Game Room (which constantly references it as a running gag) in the primordial days of YouTube. It feels almost like a natural evolution of Star Soldier from some parallel timeline where Hudson Soft didn’t develop the successive Soldier games, and instead Toaplan took the reins. My copy of the game is actually

A sun day.

So I got some feedback and suggestions for my Fruit Fly Fun game for the Atari 2600. I worked and worked and went to sleep and woke up and worked some more. I bet all in all I worked for about 8 hours combined yesterday and earlier today on it. I didn't sleep very much since I woke up because I was hot and I couldn't go back to sleep so I figured I might as well work on it. So now here is a screenshot of what I have now. I merged the two bananas into one. This is because the fly now ea

Dragon Spirit: The New Legend [NES]

Played Dragon Spirit: The New Legend [NES] It took a turbo-controller and save-states at the final boss, but I finally finished one of my favorite NES games for the first time. Dragon Spirit is a fantasy themed shoot-em-up where you play as - surprise - a DRAGON! The game uses Xevious attack mechanics, employing both a standard shot for airborne enemies and short-range bombs for ground enemies. Naturally, powerups increase your fire, but they also allow you to evolve into different dragon i

Sound effects...but no music

I've been working on my Hamburgers game for the Commodore 64. I was able to put in a few simple sound effects, but now there's no background music for the levels. I don't know whether that's a good thing or not, but that's the way it will have to be for now since I don't understand Commodore 64 sound. I made the background light blue again instead of the cyan color I switched it to. I agree - you can see the enemies better with these colors. Next I will begin work on level 2. I don't know h

Burgers on the fourth of July

I'm torn. Should I keep the sky color like it was or change it to this: It looks more sky-like, but is it kind of hard to see the enemies? I also worked on a Game over screen. Which has got to be the lamest Game Over screen in the entire world. Even still, this was really hard to program. At least it has the standard death music on it. Plus, keep in mind that I'm a beginner at Commodore 64 assembly, so I don't know much yet. In fact, I'm impressed with what I've done so

Commodore 64

The Commodore 64 was the first computer I ever had. I was around 2 at the time. We had it until Dad sold it and got me and my sister an NES. Years later, a few years ago, I saw a Commodore 64 at a local video game shop. I bought it. I didn't do anything much with it. I tried programming it, but it was really hard to do if you're not used to it. Well, I found a Commodore 64 game in my mess of my room. So I thought I'd try programming it again. Eventually I got this on the screen. I deci

The Legend of Zelda [NES]

Played through The Legend of Zelda [NES]. As a cryptic, nonlinear, exploration-based, action RPG - The Legend of Zelda is everything I hate in a video game, yet it’s an undeniable staple of the NES library (and the larger classic gaming canon). So I finally decided to play it - but in the least painful way possible: using a comprehensive online guide to save me the trouble of figuring out where to go or what to do on my own. And even though I still found the exploration obtuse and the

password code fixed!

I finally got it so you can erase one letter at a time when entering passwords. I knew that code would work, but it wasn't working. I discovered that I had to put the variables I was using in bank 4 also in bank 0. This morning I added level 30. It may seem very difficult at first, but not when you're the one making the game and discovered the way to beat it. Going into designing level 30, I wanted to make a simple level design but have it be really hard to complete. I think I mad

Ugly uppity update - June 27, 2023

Here is the password screen now. The password screen has its own song. Since I figured if I couldn't subtract one letter (which I spent one day on and failed miserably at), I thought the next best thing would be an option to restart inputting the password. And, also, I put in an option so that if you selected PASSWORD on the title screen by accident, you could still start the game on level 1. Each level has its own password, a string of 8 a or b presses. Each level's password is d

Asteroids [Atari 2600]

Rolled the score on Asteroids [Atari 2600] for game variation 1/B/B. Asteroids is a staple among classic space-shooters, but I’d never spent much time with it before - maybe because it demands that you rotate to aim your shot rather than offering a fixed-direction attack like most of its contemporaries (i.e. Space Invaders). The gameplay is definitely fun, though - and it’s always satisfying to decimate a blanket of huge space-rocks at the start of each new wave. I managed to roll the

Raiden Densetsu [Super Famicom]

Played through Raiden Densetsu [Super Famicom]. Raiden was a staple of early arcade shoot-em-ups, which can sometimes translate to console ports with clunky controls and merciless “quarter-munching” difficulty. Luckily, Raiden Densetsu on the Super Nintendo manages to steer clear of these pitfalls, offering smooth maneuvering and easy settings with adjustable lives, bombs, and credits (at least on the Japanese release). I had a lot of fun with this game - it’s one of the most straightf

R-Type III [Super Famicom]

Played through R-Type III [Super Famicom]. This wasn’t a legitimate clear because I used save states (bookmarks that aren’t natively built into the game), but R-Type III is just too challenging for me to finish otherwise. In spite of the punishing difficulty, though, this is one of the best space-shooters I’ve ever played. R-Type is the quintessential “strategy shoot-em-up” franchise, where the focus is on stage-memorization and route-planning rather than reflex. This is my personal fa

Hello Kitty World [Famicom]

Played through Hello Kitty World [Famicom]. This game is a neat curiosity in its convoluted branding and localization. Its origins trace back to Balloon Fight, a staple of Nintendo’s original 1985 NES / Famicom lineup, which was heavily-inspired by Williams Electronics’ 1982 arcade hit Joust (but without the ostriches). Balloon Fight later spawned a 1990 Game Boy sequel - Balloon Kid, which was exclusive to North America and Europe at the time. Japan didn’t get a taste until 1992, when the
