Celery - level 2 " Spacing Out"

Work on level two of my Channel F game has begun. It took longer than usual due to the fact the computer was not cooperating with me until it decided it had itself enough fun and began to work. So in level 2, Mr. Celery is in a spaceship. Lasers are coming at him from four directions and he needs the help of the blockers to block the lasers from destroying his ship. I haven't put in the blockers yet. They will be green and show outside his ship. Pressing left on the joystick will make a blo

Celery - level 1 "I Herd It."

Level 1. The beginning of a new video game. This is the first level for "adventures of the stalk of celery." I dropped the "50-foot-tall" part of the name. So Mr. Celery finds himself in the middle of an elephant stampede. Your job is to avoid the elephants. They come in different speeds. First the slow ones, then the middle ones, then the fast ones. After elephant number 30, the game would switch to the second level. But since I haven't made it yet, it just ends. I just had an idea wh

Channel F news bulletin

I got back into the Channel F again. I had to hook it up to my VCR and then to the TV instead of bypassing the VCR to get a stable, colored picture on the thing. And that's not all. I'm back to programming for it as well. I want to make a "trimerous 2" cartridge with Elevator Events, Zyx and Adventures of the 50-foot-tall Stalk of Celery on it. But in order for me to do that, I have to begin work on the latter. Here is a title screen: This morning I actually did the first step of creat

00 @Brickman Okay, so to start off, tell us what originally brought you to VGS and/or NA. I joined NA around 2011 but I didn’t post much, I mainly lurked and bought and sold stuff. VGS is a lot more open and friendly than NA was imo.  And what is the meaning behind your username?  Or usernames, in this case.  Started with SHMUP because I really love the genre (especially bullet hells) even though I’m not very good at them. Then deci

Episode 23: Rarity: Retro Video Game Collecting in the Modern Era

A Homebrew Draws Near! A blog series by @Scrobins Episode 23: Rarity: Retro Video Game Collecting in the Modern Era Introduction: For most of my life, I haven’t been someone who enjoyed documentaries. Even behind the scenes specials about subjects I liked had a hard time keeping my interest. But in the past few years, something unlocked in my brain that appreciated the stories behind my favorite interests, which sometimes offered a level of drama that rivaled the subject

HERTS Game Boy

I spent most of the day yesterday and this morning and fixed what I had and I think I finished the game. I am waiting for feedback. I want to know how well I did this time around. And a publisher to publish the game would be really nice. Just e-mail me if you're interested. Here is a link to the game's ROM: Hamburgers En Route To Switzerland thread in AtariAge. Something odd I discovered. I had been putting in #pragma bank 3 in the level defeated tune code, but discovered if I lef

Yesterday

I spent almost all of yesterday trying to fit all of the bgm I made into the game. I figured out I would need to put a couple of short tunes in bank 3, but otherwise they fit. I tried putting in a short 4-note noise but I couldn't get it to play without it being really scratchy. So before I went to bed and gave up for the day, I tried once more to put in the little victory tune, this time in bank 3. It played, but without the bass tones. So I tried to make some changes, and found out that if I t

Background music composing

So I've been busy composing little tunes for the background music for different levels. Each level will have its own song. For level 3, the snow level, for example, it will play my attempt at transcribing Winter Wonderland. The second part is really hard ("in the meadow, we can build a snowman/and pretend that he is Parson Brown...") so it may be a little off, but it sounds good, so I'm keeping it in. I am figuring I should have enough room for two more songs in bank 1, but that'd be it. Ri

Black and white burgers

So I got some help on my Game Boy version of Hamburgers En Route To Switzerland. It now works again. I originally made it not work after attempting to add a boss screen where you shoot at the boss. I had to change the background from light gray to white. I had to turn off the display for a few frames, and I made it white to make it look less shocking and more smooth when the boss milkshake disappears. Sad, because I liked the way it was, but oh well. I'll do just about anything to make

My 15th Anniversary of being a Video Game Collector

This Summer will mark the 15th anniversary of the first time I considered myself a “video game collector”. For no reason in particular, I wanted to write up something about it. Mostly just for fun I guess, to help facilitate my own nostalgia. Even though I started collecting in the Summer of 2007, I’ve been playing video games my whole life. Make no mistake about it, video games have changed my life. The trajectory of my life has changed multiple times either directly or indirectly because

Special Episode: The State of Homebrew 2022

A Homebrew Draws Near! A blog series by @Scrobins Special Episode: The State of Homebrew 2022 The evolution of homebrew has collected an enthusiastic mix of developers and gamers, all of whom draw on the love of something meaningful from their pasts to dream of what might be possible in the years to come. Though we may bring to bear the skills we have cultivated as adults, in this realm it is done to feed our inner child. Homebrew has come a long way across several decades, w

Keep it simple some more

One thing I wanted to do was change the name of the game. I wanted it to be shorter. "Hamburgers En Route To Switzerland: Zurich In Reach" is quite a mouthful (no pun intended.) So I made it simpler. I think the title screen hamburger looks much better now. It should, since it is in lovely 4 bit color. And my name is in lowercase letters for a reason: To save space. It is made up in 10 8x8 pixel squares. If I were to capitalize the letters, it would be 11. And to make the burger more d

Keep it simple

So with GoSub finished I decided to go back to programming "Hamburgers En Route To Switzerland: Zurich In Reach" for Game Gear again. I looked at what I had. I thought to myself "That cave level looks too crowded and complex with all the colors." So I decided to simplify it. Now, normally when I (or anyone else, for that matter) simplify something, it usually looks more simple. But this time, I felt like simplifying the background was a good step to make it look better. This is what the cave lev

The death of PayPal

I want to know why more and more online stores are not taking PayPal. What is wrong with PayPal? Is there something wrong with it? It's like my money is useless to them. It's like they don't want it. That's what I feel when I go to an online store and discovering they don't take PayPal. I don't have a credit card so I can't do Google Pay. What's more is I don't want a credit card.

We're trying out something new here on VGS.  Well, sort of new...  Some of you may remember a series of interviews I did with various members of NintendoAge that centered around the Weekly NES contest.  This is a partial reboot of that effort. And to kick us off is the one and only @Estil.  The good-natured, cat-obsessed Kentuckian that loves to post his cherished YouTube clips!  And he threw me an early curveball by changing some of the questions I asked him. 😆  Enjoy!    Hello E

Mega Cat Studios order

I got the order today from Mega Cat studios. Inside the box was two Game Boy games. They didn't come with a regular cardboard box. They came with a plastic holder. And apparently Infinitron is not for the regular Game Boy after all but for the Game Boy Color. So I'll have one game to review instead of two. That game will be Retroid. And I will review it as soon as I can. Unfortunately I ALSO got a jury duty summons to deal with. I think they should make it a full-time job, like a lawyer. So peop

GoSub release candidate #1

I finished the game. I programmed the ending yesterday and the Easter egg this morning. Now I need to test it. Who will help me test the game? You can download what I have of the game here. (Link to AtariAge.) It took me a little over 4 months from beginning to now to make the game. When I started, I never would have guessed I would make a Super Game Boy border for it, and learn how to do such a thing in the process. It's stuff like this that helps me to learn and make better games in the future

One game in search of a publisher.

So I've been tweaking more and more my GoSub border image. It now looks like this: The maximum number of colors the border can have is 16. That isn't a big deal yet (there's only 12 or so). But I don't want to make the border too distracting from the game. Also, I changed the coral so it looks more like seaweed. I attempted to make it like Super Mario Bros., but the coral in that game is 16x16 pixels so that wouldn't work since my coral is only 8x8. So I designed something differe

Game Boy homebrew (part 2)

So I went ahead and bought Retroid and Infinitron for Game Boy. I don't know if Infinitron can be playable on a regular Game Boy or not because the website's screenshots were in color, which I guess is okay since I have a Game Boy Color, but I am looking for stuff to play on just a regular Game Boy. As I understood and gathered, Retroid is similar to Arkanoid and Infinitron is similar to Robotron 2084. Hopefully Retroid will be better than my Game Boy games Super Breakout and Alleyway. But there

Game Boy homebrew

Where can I buy physical copies of homebrew games for the Game Boy? I've been working on GoSub and it's making me want to try out some other Game Boy homebrew games. I made a couple of changes to the border. I think it looks better. I also made the sub fall apart when it crashes. It adds a touch of realism instead of just stopping when it crashes. But I think of the poor crew drowning when I hit something when I test it now. Also, would anyone like to publish it when it's done? Th

Super Game Boy border

I have been working on this almost all morning long. I started at about 1 a.m. and it's after 9 a.m. now. But I finally made a Super Game Boy border for GoSub GB. I had to think a litlte when I was designing it. I thought about what I wanted it to look like. I took the sprites from the game, enlarged them, colored them good and this is what I ended up with (eventually) What do you think? I found and fixed a bug pertaining to the space character. I tested it on a real Super Game Boy and
